Motel One Lübeck

The staff were welcoming, kind and professional, and breakfast was good. Our room was very nice, with plenty of bathroom space in the larger room types. It’s great value and right in the center for visiting the main sights. Parking costs extra at the nearby garage, but there’s plenty of space there.

The rooms are on the small side, but very clean. Nothing wrong with the place at all.

Update: After I contacted the manager, the bill was refunded. Apparently there had been problems coordinating different systems. I checked in online with my debit card. The app said I could get a mobile room key or collect one at a pickup station, but neither worked, so I went to reception. A very rude, racist man spoke down to me and said they hadn’t received the money, but I should pay again because “you have to pay to stay at a hotel.” He said any double deduction was something I needed to sort out with my bank. While saying this, he mockingly moved his neck around. Then at about 9:40 the next morning, someone opened my door. I loudly began to say, “Excuse me...” but they rushed back out before I finished. It should have been the housekeeper, but if it wasn’t, that’s a safety issue the hotel needs to watch. It’s an okay place for a night, but be ready for a confusing online check-in, possibly paying twice, being treated horribly by the Caucasian man at reception, and someone entering your room in the morning without warning.

I got a corner room this time and it was spacious, with great air conditioning for the humid German weather. The in-room safe is handy, the WiFi was good, and there’s a big TV. Rooms are clean, modern, and good value, with enough space even though they aren’t huge. I like the technology too, like the key card activating the room and the TV looping calming images. There’s food available around the clock, a full bar, and good coffee all day. I joined the club for quick booking, one free breakfast and welcome water, and can usually find a location in lots of German cities. I come back every year just for the breakfast, which is second to none. In the lobby, staff make special drinks, especially good hot chocolate with real whole milk and the world’s best chocolate, made using the espresso machine, plus ginger tea with fresh-cut ginger root and honey. Don’t miss a gin drink from their world-class collection either. It’s super smooth.
