The breakfast was decent. Putting the light switches above your head is a stupid idea when you’re slipping.

I called the hotel to ask a question, and they expected foreign travelers to speak German. Seriously? They just cut the call without even checking whether any colleagues spoke English. Maybe they have plenty of German-speaking clients. Good for them.

The hosts are genuinely friendly, which makes it hard to leave a less-than-stellar review. Still, the hotel is showing its age. There’s mold on the bathroom tiles, other people’s hairs on the walls, and the room is worn and unclean in several places. Breakfast was average. It’s adequate for tradespeople, and the price is reasonable.

We visit the St. Luke's Market in Mayen every year and stay at the Maifelder Hof. The location is great, there’s plenty of parking, and we’ve always found the rooms clean. The owners are friendly, breakfast is good, and we’re always very satisfied. That’s all we need.

The location is handy, with direct highway access, but for the price I wouldn’t stay here again. We spent two nights with our three-year-old son. Because of occupancy, only a double room was available, so he slept in our bed. We had the Comfort double room, which was quite large and at the back, with no street noise. A bottle of water was included, but it was left on the floor outside our room on the last day. It could have been put inside. The beds were okay, though the pillows were smaller than we’re used to at home. A third pillow would have helped, since our son had to share mine. The ladies were very friendly when we booked, and the gentleman at reception was very nice at check-in. But we were immediately given a note telling us to put a sign on the door by 8 a.m. to say whether we wanted the room cleaned. Even if a room isn’t dirty after one night, I think a four-star hotel should clean it daily, especially the bathroom. After unpacking, I noticed a thick layer of dust along the shower tray edge, which the chambermaid must have missed. Breakfast was okay, with small rolls in three varieties, small croissants, bread, butter, margarine, cheeses, some cold cuts, cereal, scrambled and fried eggs, a container of crispy bacon strips, and mini sausages. The eggs were basically empty, and the juice from the machine seemed well diluted. The quark and yogurt weren’t refrigerated. I noticed the man clearing tables set them again first, then wiped the fresh dishes with a cloth that looked very dry. Clearing, wiping, then setting the tables would have been too much effort, apparently. On our first morning at the round table, there were a few dead little mosquitoes on the shelf by the lamp. That’s not what I expect from a four-star hotel. The breakfast room was very dark, though that’s a matter of opinion. The outside lighting was visibly uncleaned, with puddles everywhere and a lot of leaves that hadn’t just fallen in the last day or two. It spoiled the look. At checkout, they only asked whether we needed an invoice. As far as I know, businesses are now required to send an e-invoice as well as the paper version, but whatever. This is just our perception and opinion. Everyone can decide for themselves.
