Hotel Garni Drachenburg

The room was clean and the shower had good pressure, but ours had hardly any storage, so we left our suitcases on the balcony. The mattress was hard, and the German-style pillows looked substantial but went flat when I put my head down. We missed having a fridge. Breakfast was fresh but simple, and I think the managing staff could be more flexible and friendly. The hotel has amazing views over Mittenwald and the Karwendel mountain. A steep path out front leads to the town center, about 1 km away. Cars come around to the back, where you have to tackle some serious stairs with your luggage. Reception is only there in the morning, so on arrival you have to find your way up and down the indoor and outdoor stairs on your own.

There’s a lovely view of Mittenwald and the Karwendel from this place above town. The walk into the city is steep but manageable, and it’s also well placed for nature and the nearby lakes. One tip if you’re using Google Maps: set a destination on a road down in Mittenwald. Choosing the property itself may send you through the Elmau castle area, where the road is closed and partly gravel.

The owner also manages this historic hotel and made sure my family and I felt at home. My room was spacious, clean, and cozy, and didn’t feel like a typical hotel room. Breakfast was very good, and the owner made sure everyone in my family felt welcome. The open terrace faces the garden and overlooks one of Bavaria’s most beautiful landscapes. The hotel seems especially well named in Matemwald. I’d highly recommend it to anyone visiting Mittenwald.

The views of Mittenwald below and the mountains across the valley are lovely, and a short walking trail connects the property to downtown. Staff were very friendly, the accommodations comfortable, and breakfast had an excellent selection.
