Staying at the Stevenson House gave us a lovely immersion in local culture. Our hosts served homemade breakfasts and even let us see the staff quarters, where we got a look at the construction of this historic building. We came to Oberderdingen to visit my family’s ancestral home and vineyards, and the house made a perfect base for that. The Stevenson House is nearly 300 years old, tucked into a back street just off the main road in Oberderdingen’s old town. The surrounding lanes are full of half-timbered houses that seem frozen in time. A block away are the town market and Amhof, the site of the village, now city, hall, along with buildings dating back to the 12th century. The infamous Witches Tower, where victims of the witch hunts were held for trial, is nearby too. Oberderdingen had officially become a city only a few weeks before we arrived, though you wouldn’t know it from this quiet old-town street.
