Hotel Remarque

The room was very clean. Still, I was surprised that a four-star hotel didn’t provide slippers, an electric kettle, a fridge, an iron or ironing board, or free tea, coffee, and sugar.

The taxi ended up being cancelled, but only after the manager argued in front of other guests that I still had to pay, even though I was only at this hotel because they’d moved me from Vienna House by Wyndham Easy after overselling rooms there. He eventually relented when I explained that I shouldn’t have been moved in the first place. While I waited for my colleague, he spoke about me to staff behind the desk, apparently unaware that I understand German. Horrible treatment. The problems started after I’d unpacked and showered: the Wi-Fi didn’t work. Someone sent up from reception came into my room abruptly and couldn’t fix it. I was told the upper floors had poor reception and had to repack and switch rooms at 10 pm. In the morning there was no body soap in the shower, and the hair dryer didn’t work. Reception didn’t apologize, but said someone would bring those items. I’d also asked them to book a taxi to a meeting at Vienna House Easy, then went back to cancel when my kind colleagues offered to pick me up. I was meant to stay at the other property. Don’t waste a penny here.

I was pleasantly surprised by how much I got for the price. The room was comfortable, the staff were helpful, and the facilities made the stay feel luxurious without costing a lot. Rates were competitive with nearby hotels, and the quality and service exceeded what I expected. A good balance of price and quality.

We didn’t sleep well any night. The room got very hot, with no air conditioning and windows that wouldn’t open properly. The shower kept switching from cold to very hot and made a screeching sound, and the hairdryer didn’t work. The old, worn beds and mattresses, flat pillows, and thin, cheap sheets didn’t help. Unless your room faces the garden, there’s loud traffic from the main road and noise from people at the bar. If you’re unlucky, smoke from people by the entrance can get into the bedroom too. The location is good and our room was clean, but it was pretty uncomfortable. Some staff were really nice, others unfriendly, depending on who you spoke to. The restaurant’s business lunch was tasty and the staff there were friendly, but it took over two hours, so don’t go if you’re in a hurry.
