Das Hornsteiner

The latte macchiato is superb, and the staff are genuinely kind. Best café in Passau!

The old style gives the hotel and rooms a very pleasant feel. Whitewashed walls, arched doorways, and views that are either of the Danube or a picturesque old street. Nearby building windows do take away some privacy, but there are thick beige curtains that aren't too dark or see-through. Everything was tidy and clean, the staff helpful, and the mattress was sturdy yet comfortable. The rooms feel romantic, bright, and charming, while the kitchen, bathroom, WC, sinks, and taps are modern. We liked the distant, soothing bell chimes from suite 5, even though some people find them bothersome. The floors squeak, but that didn't bother us much in an authentic old building. The one thing we would change is the bathroom door. In our opinion, its windows should have the same linen covering as the outside and bedroom doors. It was too transparent next to the kids' bedroom. If we'd swapped rooms, the parents would have had two single beds and the kids one double.

Das Hornsteiner has a special setting and unusual rooms, and if you're after somewhere charming and different, you'll like it. Booking was uncomplicated, as was checking in late. Our room seemed to be in the building's old cellar, renovated of course, and the place feels like it has a lot of history. The beds were comfy, we enjoyed the bathroom, and having a fully equipped kitchen in the room was great. My only reason for giving four stars is that dust seemed to snow down from the ceiling. That's just my personal feeling, and I understand this isn't a plain vanilla hotel room, so I wouldn't really complain. But if you're a neurotic cleaner, it might bother you, so I wanted to mention it.

A perfect place to have coffee in Passau, with a lovely, intimate atmosphere, stylish vintage furniture, and very nice cakes and pies that aren't too sweet. We visited for the buffet.
