Hotel Zur Lochmühle

Food portions are good, and there’s a big menu with plenty of delicious options. The hotel is quite quaint, with a winter garden and a pool. In snowy winter weather, though, getting out of the parking lot can be really difficult.

The restaurant was the bright spot for me. The food was really good, though a bit pricey for my taste. If you're after good traditional German food and can live with the prices, I can recommend the restaurant and the location. Staying overnight is another matter. The room was a disgrace: mold in the bathroom grout throughout, mold on the lower walls, rusty radiators, and a musty smell. The window was almost impossible to see through, with bits of fly screen apparently patched all over it to keep insects out. A ratchet strap was holding the TV to its mount. After 9:30 p.m., the courtyard and path to the parking lot were completely dark. I stopped at Hotel "Zur Lochmühle" in Penig during our training tour, and was glad it was just for one night. I arrived very late and went straight to eat, so I didn't notice the problems until everyone else had left. I'll see how they respond tomorrow.

We went for a Sunday outing, two seniors, one adult, and a 10-year-old, with our dog. They let us sit on the terrace, which was lovely, quiet, and surrounded by greenery. The hotel is in a similarly peaceful spot. Don't let the "local traffic only" signs put you off on the way there, there's plenty of parking at the hotel. The food was solid and filling enough, though not a highlight for us. Meals average around €18. The child's portion could be bigger, since fries aren't exactly a luxury. After a long hike or bike ride, we think the portions might be too small, though still manageable. It could work for a big family gathering, especially with all there is for kids in the outdoor area. One server was very friendly, and since she was working alone, the wait for drinks and food was reasonable. All in all, it's okay, but a bit out of the way for a trip just for the food. We'd give it a solid 3 out of 5.
