6/10
The staff were attentive and efficient, though not very engaging. Dinner was fair and imaginative, but not a bargain, and breakfast was reasonable without being spectacular. The public spaces were orderly and clean in a clinical way, but they didn't feel inviting. Like so many historic houses in Germany, this one has been renovated too heavily. DDR style, soulless light fittings, fake 'original' wall patches, plastic chairs and endless contemporary greyish paint have taken away the period charm. I expect a historic house to be a bit quirky, with creaking floorboards, gloomy oil paintings, dusty books, old sofas by open fires and grandfather clocks ticking in the background. It should transport you into the past. Sadly, this place feels like a reminder that our century has lost its soul and its connection with the past. I wonder if a real historic house hotel still exists in Germany.

The rooms were cozy and comfortable, and the service was high quality. It’s a beautiful castle, and the food was delicious.
