The steam train stop right beside the hotel was a real highlight. You can just get on, buy a ticket from the train staff, and enjoy the ride through all sorts of lovely places. The rooms were clean, tidy, and comfortable. Breakfast was simple, with the usual classics, but tasty and perfectly adequate. Staff were great, service was excellent, and the location was very good. The hotel is next to a street, but with the windows shut we couldn't hear the traffic.

Railway fans will enjoy the Lößnitzgrundbahn passing several times a day, with its whistle announcing the train. The guesthouse is right beside the tracks, and the station is a short walk away. There’s free parking across the street, though getting to the entrance means crossing a road that’s hard to see clearly. Listen as well as look for traffic. The building has lots of stairs, so it won’t work for people with mobility problems. There was an old key box covered in bird droppings by the entrance. We arrived at 3 p.m. after being told by phone that someone would still be there and where to find the key. It was gone, and we couldn't locate the open key box despite the directions. It was at foot level beside the entrance. The envelope held the key information, including the emergency mobile number, room number, and Wi-Fi password. Our room was clean and spacious enough, with light wood furniture that had seen better days. One wardrobe key was broken off, leaving it there as decoration. The beds were too soft for my husband, though that's personal preference. White curtains let in all the light, and the exterior shutters were just decorative and couldn't be used. By 4 a.m. the room was bright. The crib we'd requested was there, but it seemed to be from the 90s and was incredibly wobbly. The mattress we brought didn't fit. We managed as best we could. We'd been told on the phone it would come with bedding, but it had no mattress or bedding, just an 80x80 cm pillow with a cover and a fitted sheet over the base. We used the cover as a blanket. It was already warm, so that was okay, and luckily we'd brought a pillow. There was plenty of storage and clothes hangers. The balcony was large, shared with neighboring rooms across the whole floor, and had seats. Cushions were in the wardrobe. The room came with towels, bath towels, shower gel, hand soap, and a hairdryer. The bathroom light was unpredictable. It was controlled by a motion sensor and switched off after about 20 seconds, then came on again when you waved your hand, sometimes staying on for a while. There was no clear pattern. The breakfast room is in the annex. From our room on the guesthouse's second floor, it took almost 40 steps down to reach it. Breakfast was adequate: cold cuts, cheese, eggs, juice, coffee, fruit, vegetables, yogurt, and muesli. A sign said the office was on the second floor. On our last day we searched the whole guesthouse to check out, but couldn't find an office or the owner. At last, the woman in charge of breakfast told us we must have seen everyone else paying her. We hadn't. That is not what I call customer service.

We had a weekend stay at Pension Bilz and will definitely return. The owners were so friendly, the rooms were lovely, and breakfast was superb. This place has a charm all its own. Family U. from Süßen
