Gasthof-Hotel Hoehensteiger

The room had a musty smell that stuck around for our whole stay, especially in the shower room. They’d left the windows ajar to air it out before we arrived, but that didn’t fix it. At first the room seemed clean, though after a closer look the cleaning felt pretty superficial. The bathroom makeup wipes had expired five months earlier, and there were cobwebs by the window. We also found dead insects on the wall, with their blood still there. Maybe other guests left them, but wiping them off and covering the marks with a bit of white paint wouldn’t have taken much work. We stayed in the old house, where the decor felt a little creepy, though I understand they may have wanted to keep its authentic style. The walls were very thin, so we could hear neighbors showering, walking along the corridor, and opening and closing doors at night. The building faces a busy street. The window muffled the traffic reasonably well, but cars and trucks still woke us a few times. The staff were the best part. The woman at reception was so sweet and kind, even while rushing between different jobs on a busy day, and her English was perfect. The morning chef was cheerful and chatted with guests. His bright, welcoming energy was much appreciated. The beds were comfortable too, and there were more modern, renovated rooms in another building. Still, it wasn’t a pleasant stay, and I can’t give it just one star because the staff were incredible and the beds were comfy.
