The family who run the place really notice the little things. They remembered that it was my wife’s birthday on checkout day and had set up a table for a champagne breakfast. They also gave us a generous late checkout. We stayed in the junior Suite (Eselstall), a lovely modern room with a theme and a broad balcony overlooking the church and centre of Rüdesheim Assmannshausen. Breakfast was very good, especially the regional cold cuts from the local butcher. Our three-course dinner on the second evening was hearty and tasty, with live music, and the service was excellent at both meals. It’s very dog friendly too. A beautiful area and a lovely stay. I can highly recommend it.

We had a couple of comfortable nights here with an English coach party. The rooms were clean, and we ate in the hotel restaurant, where Nguyen looked after us with real courtesy and professionalism. The à la carte menu had a nice range of starters, mains and desserts. It’s a quaint period German hotel. The management welcomed us with a brief history of the building, its development and ownership.

After a long hike, we stopped here for lunch. The pork schnitzel and venison stew were delicious, and the atmosphere was nice. Good value too.

The food felt pretty sparse, and there were no kettles in the rooms, which really should be considered these days. The hotel also seems to treat coach parties as second-class guests. We were put together at separate tables and discouraged from moving around, even though coach parties are what keep the hotel going. That needs addressing. The town feels like time has forgotten it, even though the hotel is only a short way from the Rhine. There are just two shops, and they’re hardly ever open, with nothing to do at night. A railway is nearby. Church bells ring from 7 am to 10 pm, including every quarter of an hour during the day. Many other places have closed down.

The food was really excellent, and you can buy excellent wine at the hotel. The staff were friendly and professional, and the rooms were spacious with all the comforts. I spent my holiday at Berg's Alte Bauernschanke hotel in Rudesheim am Rhein, Germany. It’s a beautifully maintained old building with a romantic feel. I’ll come back to hotel Berg.
