The electronic check-in was a welcome addition for us and easy enough to use. We first came twelve years ago, and I still remembered the lovely linen and the delicious breakfast, beautifully laid out in that comfortable, tastefully decorated room. Those things are just as good now, and even the staff are the same. The bedrooms have been updated in a modern style, while keeping the quality. We hope to visit again on our next European road trip, and stay longer this time.

Once inside, we found the hotel clean, with decent breakfasts, a great location, easy parking, and a genuinely dog-friendly setup, including room bowls and special dog towels. But getting in was the worst hotel check-in I've experienced. The website struggles on a Mac using Safari, and on mobile it can't get past cookie-blocker banners. I doubt the Apple Pay option was ever tested. With everything moved to an app and no reception, there was nobody on site to help when we couldn't open the door. Fortunately, we reached the owner by phone. The hotel advertises EV charging but doesn't show the per-kWh price; I was charged €1.33, twice what fast charging on the highway costs. The hotel itself is nice, but the IT system makes the whole experience a disaster.

We nearly made up for the door and app frustrations with the nice breakfast. Arriving, we spent about ten minutes trying to get the front door open through the app, website, and email on our phone. Having to rely on a mobile for check-in and out and for opening doors takes some getting used to. Just remember to keep it with you when you leave the room, or you could lock yourself out. We did get accustomed to the system, but it cost the hotel its fifth star for rooms and service.

It's handy being within walking distance of everything, and I had no trouble with parking. There isn't staff on site all the time, so check-in and unlocking doors are done in the web app. That could be hard for someone who's not comfortable with tech, though there's a phone number to call. The room was adequate and the bathroom clean. There was no AC or safe, but neither was an issue during my stay.

We had such a wonderful two-week stay at Alpenhotel Wittelsbach in August 2018 that we're returning this September. Marcus, Anja, Katerina, and all the excellent staff were always smiling and couldn't do enough for us. We loved our suite, the food, the amenities, and Ruhpolding itself. Reading some reviews, I find myself wondering if we stayed at the same place! Illness kept us from coming back sooner, but we're looking forward to being there again. Sally Mc Donald, Ireland.
