Waldsee Hotel Am Wirchensee

The restaurant let us down. We had to change our order three times, and what we got was bland and boring. At 26.50 per person, the set price felt like a rip off. The bungalow itself was clean and comfortable, though, and the location and view were lovely.

The food was the biggest letdown this time. My duck was tough and hard to get off the bone, the dumplings were cold, mushy, and bland, and the gravy had a strong convenience-food taste. Coke Zero wasn't available either. The children's schnitzel looked frozen, with the usual perforations visible through the breading, and the fries were soft and rubbery, as if they hadn't been fried long enough or hot enough. We'd eaten at the Waldseehotel Wirchensee several times before and had always been satisfied, which made this visit especially disappointing. I ordered the daily special, roast duck with red cabbage and dumplings, along with chicken livers and potatoes, plus schnitzel and fries for the child. The potatoes with the liver were cold and still crisp inside. After I complained, the plate was taken away and returned without them. We were told fresh potatoes were coming, but they took about eight minutes. I ate the liver while waiting so it wouldn't go cold. The new potatoes were hot, but still undercooked. There was no apology or discount. The dining room was uncomfortable too. A cat kept wandering around and even headed towards the kitchen, which we felt was a hygiene issue. A manager also seemed to have loud conversations with staff, disturbing the otherwise peaceful atmosphere. We used to enjoy eating here for the lakeside setting and ambience. It's sad to see the quality, organization, and service drop so much. After this visit, we can't hold on to the good impression we had before.

The website says sauna use is included, so we were very disappointed when our children couldn't use it during their birthday weekend. They were first told it wasn't available, then found out it was broken. The manager, or possibly the owner, confirmed this in a very unfriendly conversation, and there was no adequate compensation. Since they were the only guests that weekend, you might wonder whether turning on the sauna for just two people wasn't considered worthwhile. The hotel is in a beautiful setting, and the staff did try very hard.
