Sonnenschein

I spent 10 nights here in late summer with my dog and really enjoyed it. Oberkirchen makes a great base for hikes and exploring the Hochsauerland region, and it works well for a stay with a dog. Mrs. Blank was very friendly and had lots of tips about the area. Even with summer temperatures of 25-30°C, the room stayed pleasantly cool. It was clean and adequately furnished, though the bathroom was a little small. Breakfast deserves a mention too: it was excellent, with lots of homemade things and something different each day.

The privacy issue was a big problem for us. While we were out, the guesthouse lady kept coming into our room, closing the window, switching the nightlights back on, and folding our nightclothes. I have migraines and needed to air the musty room out often, especially with the heating on, but she continued to enter while we were away. I couldn't have stayed another night. I slept badly, and my husband took me for a walk in the night because the room was so musty. The room also wasn't especially clean, and the old furniture looked its age. The building and outdoor areas seemed very run-down when we arrived for our New Year's Eve stay. It was winter, but they could still do more outside. The carpeted hallway felt unhygienic, especially with animals allowed in the guesthouse, and I worried about mites. Breakfast was shocking and disappointing. We got just 1 1/2 rolls each, and I couldn't see why everyone couldn't simply have had 2. There was also a really old slice of bread and toast in our roll bowl, as if it was a matter of take it or go without. For two adults there were two slices of cheese, one slice of salami, a little cream cheese, and a small piece of butter. The portions felt stingy. The thermos of warm water was badly scaled and looked old. I'd never seen anything so disgusting. We did have a lovely day in Winterberg before leaving. I know the accommodation isn't very expensive, but we still expected cleanliness, hygiene, and a fresh breakfast.

Update 2022 I came back to stay with Mrs. Blank for a few days with my dog, and felt very comfortable again. This was my second visit with him. Dinner was offered again this time, and it was absolutely recommendable. Like breakfast, much of it was homemade and lovingly presented. The price was excellent.

Booking through their own website costs less, so that's the better option. I stayed two nights after reading the very good reviews, and they were all true. The hostess was a really nice, pleasant woman, and breakfast was very good, with homemade bread, jams, and more. Everything was great, though the room got cold in the evenings.
