My first time there was in June 1985, when I arrived for duty at the former US army Air Base. I don't know what brought the place to mind, but it quickly became my favorite spot for German food in Hessental. I haven't returned since the late 1980s. From the photos and reviews, though, it still looks like a safe bet for a stop.

The cooks did a great job with the food, including a customized order, and I was glad to find a vegan dish that tasted really good. The hotel itself is very old. Reception told me it was 600 years old. The rooms are compact, with lovely wooden architecture that helps keep them warm.

I’d have liked more vegan and vegetarian choices at breakfast. The rooms are excellent, though, and the staff are friendly and helpful.

A cozy, traditional German place with polite, nice waiters. The traditional meal was delicious and the service was good.
