Mercure Hotel Trier Porta Nigra

The room was good, with the Porta Nigra right outside the window. You can see the Christmas market, and there are lots of bars and restaurants nearby. It’s a very short walk to the train and bus stations, in a safe area. Just be aware, there’s no car rental on site, even though the listing says there is.

The room was very good, with great views, and toothbrushes were among the handy extras. The location is excellent, very close to Porta Nigra. There’s convenient parking under the hotel, but it costs extra. I skipped breakfast because €23.50 for one person was too expensive. The kitchen closed at 20:00 because it was a quiet night, which wasn’t ideal, though there were plenty of options in town.

If you’re a tourist who doesn’t speak German, I’d stay far away from this hotel. The older woman at reception was upset that I couldn’t speak German, told me to return to my country and called me an illegal immigrant. That’s clear racism. People who treat customers this way shouldn’t work in customer service, especially at a hotel that’s supposed to welcome tourists.

The location was the only good thing. The shower and sink water wouldn’t stay cold: it ran cold for minutes, then turned hot and very hot. To get warm or cold water for a shower, I had to set the knobs at a certain angle and keep the water flow very low. I told reception, and a woman said someone would come to check and fix it, but nobody came. I had to put up with it for my whole stay. The room was impractical too, with stairs inside that were useless and made it difficult to carry luggage up and down. The elevator didn’t work well. Only one was still working, and it was slow. So many things in this hotel are broken and not being taken care of or fixed.
