The setting is the strongest part: deep in the forest, peaceful, with good parking and a welcome for dogs. The room was clean, but much smaller and less well equipped than the one shown when we booked. There was no balcony, and the bed was old, creaky and noisy. The 1970s decor felt like a bit of time travel, which I actually enjoyed. The rest of the place, though, seemed neglected and almost abandoned. We arrived at 5pm to find reception empty and the building dark. Our key was sitting on the desk with no directions. Since the room number was in the 300s, we first went up to the second floor, but it wasn't there. With no staff around, we had to search. The basement level, marked -1 or U, was dark, musty and full of stored equipment. A back exit led to an annex: rooms in the 300s are on its ground floor, while the 400s are in its basement. The restaurant appeared to serve breakfast only. Breakfast was fine, with a buffet on the first morning and food brought to our table the next. The lift was switched off from 11pm to 7am, the wifi stopped working at night, and there was no mobile reception in our room. We had to leave the building to get a signal. There was a sign at checkout saying payment was cash only because the card machine was out of order. The staff member who took our key didn't ask us to pay, so we assumed the booking.com card payment had gone through. It hadn't. The hotel later emailed us abruptly asking for a bank transfer, with no apology or acknowledgment that their staff had made a mistake. Communication from management was poor throughout. Nobody told us before arrival that our booked room had been downgraded. When we raised it, there was no apology; we were told the main building's rooms were being renovated and unavailable, and that we'd got a cheap price. They blamed the mismatch on booking.com. That felt unprofessional and left us with a strange impression of the place. It could be really nice with renovations and better management, and I hope they improve.

The receptionist's manner is why I gave this place one star. At checkout she took my key without greeting me or saying anything. When I asked for an invoice, she handed it over and walked away without a word of thanks or goodbye. Her expression and body language felt downright offensive, and she was nowhere near welcoming or professional. The hotel itself is nice, with pleasant rooms and a lovely view, set well away from everything in the forest. You'll need to drive a bit if you want a supermarket. The listing mentioned a minibar, but there wasn't one, though that didn't affect my rating. The shower control was broken and hard to use, so I wasted more water than I meant to before I got the hang of it.

The food was delicious, and the staff were exceptionally friendly and kind. I also loved the nature around the hotel. But without a car, there isn't much to do, and the nearest town is a 10-minute drive away, which makes getting food or water on foot difficult. My room was in a separate building. The bathroom windows couldn't be covered, so I put towels over them for privacy. Strange noises went on all night, and I had to use earplugs. There was no way to contact the hotel from those rooms, so if something broke or I needed water, I had to go to reception. Nobody was there at night either. I hope they sort out these smaller issues.

The breakfast room staff made us feel unwelcome. They shouted across the room that we shouldn't sit in the Wintergarten because it had already been set up for lunch, then kept complaining that we should have realized that. The rest of the staff were nice. The hotel was clean and pleasant, and the rooms have been newly renovated. Breakfast had a good range of bread and toppings. The space in front of the toilet was a little tight for a tall person, but manageable.

As the only vegetarian in our group, my choices were soup and then salad. Nobody else had a starter, so sitting with soup while they waited felt awkward. It would have made more sense to serve it alongside everyone else's main course. The soup itself was bland. The salad was basically leaves with a couple of cucumber pieces, no croutons, coleslaw, nuts, seeds or any protein. Worse, it hadn't been washed properly: I kept biting into gritty lettuce. I eventually gave up and went hungry. I told the waitress, but she did nothing, and the bill wasn't reduced. Really disappointing.
