Himmelspforten

I only arrived today, but the building already made a strong impression. Nuns live and work here, which adds to the atmosphere. If you’re looking for a place to meditate and worship, I’d definitely recommend Himmelspforten for a retreat.

Breakfast was delicious, with plenty of homemade and local things. Our room was spacious and nicely furnished, and the bathroom was spotless and modern. We were here for one night during the Christmas market, and were the only private guests among people attending conferences. The building sits inside old walls, with a lovely mix of historic character and modern touches. There’s a faint hum from the nearby railway at night. Earplugs were provided, though we didn’t need them.

What stayed with me most was the warmth of the staff. They’re extremely friendly and professional, and make the visit feel special. Himmelspforten is a retreat center and conference venue, but also a place for quiet and contemplation, with a welcoming atmosphere. It feels like heaven and earth meet here. I’d gladly return, for a conference or for prayer.

The rooms are on the small side, simply furnished, and the beds are rather narrow. Still, they’re clean and perfectly adequate for a night. The food was really good, and the staff were very friendly and accommodating. For conferences, this accommodation works very well: the conference rooms are modern and well suited to the purpose, and the monastery setting makes it feel special.
