Holiday Inn Express Wuppertal - Hauptbahnhof by IHG

The staff made our stay feel welcoming from the moment we arrived, especially the very friendly receptionists. The hotel is easy to get to and its prices are good for the area. We had a pleasant stay, thank you.

I returned to my assigned room late one night, opened it with my key card, and found a half-naked, intoxicated intruder who wasn't a guest lying on my bed. Reception called the police right away. They interviewed me and detained the man. Hotel staff told me the door lock system had been hacked or had a security failure that let him in. I rarely write reviews this long, but the experience was horrifying and unacceptable. The Front Office Staff on duty handled the emergency professionally and with genuine concern. They moved me to another room and did their best in a situation beyond their authority. But no hotel manager contacted me for more than 24 hours to ask how I was, apologize, or offer support. That was a shocking lack of care and accountability from management. I raised the serious security failure with IHG Corporate Guest Relations under Case ID: 10580344073. The final offer was 5,000 IHG One Rewards points, worth about €5 to €10. As an IHG One Rewards Platinum Elite member, I felt my loyalty and safety were valued at less than a cup of coffee. The frontline staff were excellent, but when a crisis came up, the management and corporate response failed completely. [UPDATE: December 6, 2025] IHG has refused to take accountability for the serious security failure involving the intruder and police report, and has offered nothing better than the original 5,000 points, about €5. The hotel management also has not processed the promised refund for the unused room, despite committing to it at checkout.

The lounge is a nice place to have a beer or two at the end of the day, and some rooms have a direct view of the Schwebebahn, which is a unique touch. The hotel is right in the heart of Wuppertal and has its own parking. The rooms are clean, spacious and recently renovated. Breakfast is plentiful and delicious, and entry is key-card only, which feels safe.

The rooms, breakfast, and staff were all nice, and it was an excellent experience. The front desk could use more people during the busy hours, though.
