We paid $28 for two people on a Saturday in January, then found a hotel up the block for $18 the next night, with better Wi-Fi, air conditioning, and a door that locked. We only stayed here one night after arriving in Santo Domingo. The front desk staff were friendly and knew a little English, and the beds and bathrooms were very clean. There was a big bottled-water dispenser in the roomy kitchen and dining space. The hostel was quiet, though there weren't many people around to talk to. The basics were hit and miss: Wi-Fi, electricity, and hot water all came and went, and there was no air conditioning. There were no lockers for bags. Even when we asked for a private room, it opened onto another bunk area and had no door.

For what we paid for three people, we probably could have stayed somewhere else. On another trip, we paid less per person to be much closer to the Conde, and breakfast was included. This place was fine and about a 10-minute walk from things. If you're traveling alone and trying to save money, it might work better.

If you're here to explore rather than spend time at the hotel, this place gives you a more authentic experience. It's reasonably priced and not far from sightseeing spots, though I used Uber to get around and found that practical. Rafael was really helpful whenever I asked, even though he only spoke Spanish. One night the neighbors were playing loud music, and he agreed to move me to a room farther away. I could also use the kitchen whenever I wanted. The place hasn't been renovated and was a bit dusty, and mosquitoes are to be expected. The pillows had unpleasant stains, so I usually bring my own pillowcase. Nobody spoke English, which at least pushed me to practice and learn.

The owner was a nice guy, but I wouldn't choose this for a night as a couple if privacy matters. There's no private bathroom, the bed wasn't comfortable, and they no longer offer breakfast. It could suit a solo traveler or students. I went to casa del sol afterward and had a much better experience.

The room was big enough for the price, and the price itself was great. The manager and all the employees were friendly and helpful, and everything we needed was close by. I'd come back.
