Hotel Vaway

The sheets were soft, and you really can't beat the location. That's about where the good parts end for me. We stayed Friday and Saturday, and street noise, music from parties in the nearby plazas, and traffic kept us from sleeping well both nights. The elevator was out for most of our stay, and the breakfast, which was advertised as excellent, disappointed everyone. If you're considering Vaway, I'd look elsewhere. You can get better value at other places, and maybe a decent night's sleep too.

One thing to check before booking: ask whether there's a lift. Places here are often up high, and getting there can be a real effort after a long day. Cuenca is a colonial city, not Miami, but it's excellent and friendly.

The room was spacious, modern, and clean, with plenty of shelves for your things and electric outlets in useful spots. The bathroom had all the toiletries you'd expect, and the elevator came in handy since we were on the 4th floor and breakfast was on the 7th. Breakfast at the rooftop restaurant and bar Terra360 was good. Bring a coat for the chilly mornings up there. As of March 2025, breakfast is buffet style. Apparently it used to be a la carte. Being right in the historic center means noise carries on late. There was no safe in the room. The smart TV had no service plan, so you need your own Netflix, Prime, or similar account. My plan apparently doesn't work in foreign countries, so I couldn't watch TV.

We booked three nights, but left after the second to find somewhere quieter. The city center location was perfect for exploring, though terrible for a good night's sleep. The rooftop bar had loud music and people there until 11 or later, with parties during the week that went on until 1-1:30 AM. After one party, construction outside started at 2:30 AM. The room was clean and as described online, but there was no air circulation or bathroom vent. We had to leave the one window fully open and prop the main door open, which made sleeping even harder. Most of the staff were friendly, but things got confusing at the rooftop Terra 360 restaurant. They wanted us to dine and order multiple drinks when we only wanted a single glass of wine for the room. I apologized for any confusion and left a generous tip, yet felt we were treated poorly for the rest of our stay. I'm not sure whether the restaurant staff reflect the hotel, but room service is advertised through the restaurant.
