Hostal Tongo Reef

We booked a suite with an extra-large bed and were given a basic, worn-out room instead. The owner was unfriendly and refused to return the price difference. There's a disco across the street, so expect the party crowd to wake you at 4am as they leave. It wasn't worth the price, and there are plenty of better options on the island. I'd stay away from this hostel.

Everything we needed for a week and a half was provided, including a nice local breakfast and information to help us make the most of the visit. The owners were accommodating and easy to reach, and the family also runs a tour company, so they can help with pretty much everything you'd need. It's a beautiful place with amazing hosts. This was our second trip to San Cristobal, and I wouldn't stay anywhere else. Thanks for having us, we'll be back soon!

Breakfast was hearty and served early, from 6:15am, which was really useful before tours or transport. Our room was roomy, clean, comfortable and well ventilated, with a good shower and very hot water. The owners were friendly and went out of their way to make the stay pleasant. The place is a few minutes' walk from the center and port, and was very quiet. I'd seen earlier reviews mention construction, but we neither saw nor heard any.

We had a full-day tour planned, but the breakfast included with our booking was supposed to start at 6 am. At 0630 there was no food and nobody in the breakfast area. We waited 20 minutes, then left hungry. Music was blasting until 3am on the first night, so we couldn’t sleep well. The owner or staff didn’t seem interested in dealing with it. Since check-in, we hadn’t seen any staff at all, and the manager never replied to my direct WhatsApp message even though it had been seen. Terrible experience. The worst we’d ever had. Just don’t try this place.
