Casa Gaia Mompiche

The restaurant experience was awful. We waited about an hour, weren't allowed to choose what to eat, and were told to have whatever was most popular. Each dish was $15, but they never gave us the prices in advance, only the final bill. You also have to plan around the tide, since you can't go anywhere once it comes in. It cost $100 per couple, which was far too much for what was offered. They require payment for the whole stay, and when I asked for a refund because of the terrible service, they refused to return my money. The owner's service was disappointing too. He doesn't issue receipts, and although he agrees to requests for extras, he doesn't follow through. When we complained, he said, "This is why I don't like serving locals." The hotel water was yellowish and salty, not even good for showering. I don't recommend this place.

There are lots of places to sit and spend the day, with mangroves behind the hotel. The rooms all face the sea, though some have a better view than others. It's a good beachfront location, but there's no road access. You have to walk along the beach at low tide, so check your arrival and departure times. It costs $50 per person including breakfast. Other meals are $15 per person, but be ready for food to be sold out even when the offer sounds friendly. We weren't told this ahead of time, and the first dinner felt more like a welcome meal with just one menu. Drinks are available too. You can bring a cooler, since the walk to Mompiche takes about 20 minutes and whether you can make it depends on the tide.

I think they may have new managers. The place is well maintained, and you can leave on foot or by boat they arrange. The service was excellent.

The rooms smelled bad, and the cabin they gave us had bats. There was no hot water and the service was poor. We were traveling with a baby and couldn't stay in those conditions. Caolai, the manager, said he'd refund our deposit, then sent me insulting messages. Worst experience in Mompiche.
