The breakfast was a real highlight: very good, served in a beautiful basement, with the warm dishes cooked to order. The staff I met were warm, proud of the hotel and passionate about Tallinn. From the welcome to breakfast, they got the essentials right, and the hotel is much bigger than it first appears. I don't usually review hotels unless they're bad, but this one was excellent for the price. My top-floor room faced the courtyard and was very quiet. It was clean and charming, though a little worn, with a bed that was too soft for me. The shower curtain instead of a glass cubicle wasn't a deal-breaker. The gym, sauna and Elemis toiletries were a nice surprise. A gem of a budget hotel.

Staff were really helpful with tips for the Old Town, and I loved the rainforest shower. It's rare to find a hotel shower with that much power. Still the best location in Tallinn.

Breakfast turned out to be a great choice, even though we weren't sure at first with so many restaurants and bars around Old Town. There was a big selection of cereals, cold buffet items, pastries and cooked dishes, plus a waffle station, and it was all delicious. The hotel also had lovely facilities: a free sauna you could book, gym, shared seating areas with board games, a courtyard and an on-site coffee bar. Our room had historic touches, including a panelled ceiling and vintage furniture, as well as a roll-top bath. The location was ideal for exploring Old Town. It was perfect for us, and we'd happily recommend it to anyone after more of a 'boutique' hotel stay.

Helga and the reception team were so helpful from check-in through the rest of our stay. We had a last-minute change and arrived a day later than planned, and the hotel adjusted our reservation. Our room, the Board Room Suite, had A/C, a comfortable bed and lots of space. Breakfast downstairs in the restaurant was a treat, with a great spread. Merchants House is in a perfect spot in Old Town, and taxis/Bolts can stop just up the lane. There's no elevator, but Helga even helped carry our luggage to the second floor. Such a neat experience.

Inside the hotel, the coffee bar makes great coffee. The building wraps around a central courtyard, and many rooms look onto it. It was very quiet, with no traffic on the road outside because this part of the old town is pedestrianised. The hotel is extremely central, just a few steps from Town Hall square. To reach the airport or go elsewhere by Bolt (an Estonian company, in case you didn’t know), just walk a couple of minutes and wait outside the Tourist Office. The room needs an upgrade. The windows were hard to close properly, and thicker curtains or a blind would help those of us who can't sleep with light coming through.
