We'd prepaid through Booking.com for one room for two, but the receptionist, who was genuinely nice, told us on arrival the booking was for one person. He messaged his boss, and after we waited, they said two of us couldn't stay in that room. They offered a room for two if we paid another $6. I tried explaining we could manage in the single room since we were only there for one night, but the boss wouldn't agree, so we paid the extra cash. Then someone led us several streets away, about 10 minutes from the original hotel, to a different place. The replacement room was dusty and had no window at all. I asked Booking.com customer service to refund the $6, but they refused because the booking was a “partnership offer” handled entirely by the hotel. It felt like they let you book a single room for two, then ask for more money when you arrive. Typical Egypt tourist scam.

My sister Faritha checked out of Meramees Hostel today after a really lovely stay. The food was delicious, and the woman serving it was kind and lovely. Shaaban at reception was helpful and very kind, and the manager said she could come back if she ran into trouble later in her trip. That made her feel safe, since many hostels wouldn't offer that. She'd happily recommend the hostel to anyone visiting Cairo. It feels welcoming and like home, and she felt super safe there.

The upper floor didn't seem to get much attention. There was cat poop on a sofa and a bad smell, and cleanliness up there clearly wasn't being monitored properly, so I had to ask reception to clean it. The general atmosphere wasn't great either. I ended up at Meramees after Australian hostel was overbooked, even though I'd paid. There was some discussion when I arrived, and the people there didn't seem happy to see me. The receptionist wasn't welcoming and acted as if I'd come to stay for free. My earlier booking included breakfast, but here they said breakfast wasn't included, despite charging more than the previous hostel.

Mustafa was so helpful and nice. He let us check in well before the scheduled 1pm time and stay past checkout, which made things much easier for us. The hotel itself was lovely and clean, with really comfortable beds. The AC worked great and the refrigerator worked perfectly.

I stayed in a dorm and had a great time. Breakfast was included and really nice, and the staff were always around to help make the stay enjoyable.
