HG City Suites Barcelona

We were on the first floor in a room facing the street, and the noise carried on every night from around 9 PM until 7 AM. It was really hard to sleep. After three nights, I can’t see how this place has a 4-star rating, and I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone who values a good night’s rest.

The location is good, though weekend noise from outside could be heard clearly in the room. Better soundproofing on the windows might help. I also had trouble with the soap dispenser head and the shampoo dispenser, which didn’t work properly. We’d asked for one bed but got two separate beds, making it uncomfortable to sleep. The reception team were very helpful, and Alya in particular made our stay nicer with her warm smile and willingness to help. The hotel didn’t quite feel like a 4-star place, but it was still a good option.

The room matched the photos and was clean and tidy, but I won’t return because of how the late checkout was handled. At check-in, we specifically asked if it was possible and were told it would cost 20 euro. We said we’d decide in the morning, and that was that. The next morning, a different receptionist called and abruptly said late checkout wasn’t possible that day and we had 10 minutes to leave. I pushed back because that contradicted what we’d been told. We were eventually given an hour, but she questioned who had given us the earlier information and said late checkout had to be confirmed the night before. We don’t know whether that’s really the policy. Nobody had mentioned it when we arrived or when we asked. When we checked out, there was no apology for the confusion, or even a goodbye. I didn’t get the receptionist’s name, but that rude treatment was enough to put me off. For a supposed 4-star hotel, I expect basic decency.

We’d stayed here before. The room is spacious, and the location isn’t bad, though it’s still some way from the nearest station. The neighborhood felt mixed, and could be quiet or noisy depending on the time of day. The service is why I’m giving a low rating. We had two bookings on consecutive days because we decided to stay an extra night, both under the same name. The receptionists looked at the bookings, rolled their eyes, spoke to each other in Spanish, and laughed at us. I don’t understand why they’d laugh at someone’s booking. I’ve never seen that at another hotel. They didn’t explain the amenities or checkout policy, or tell us anything afterward. I recommend avoiding this hotel and choosing somewhere else in Barcelona because of the way they treated Spanish speakers. There are plenty of good hotels in the city.
