Hostal Excellence

Don't book this place. The accommodation was terrible, and the customer service was the worst in town. The location isn't worth what you get, especially with plenty of better places nearby whose management cares about guests. Once they have your booking, they ignore you. They only want your money and don't care about your wellbeing. It also felt very unsafe.

We stayed at a friend's place in the same building, not at the hostel itself. For all four days we were there, the door had a sign saying, “warm water will be restored in the morning.” People like this are making the city unbearable for locals. The entire city center is full of scammers. Please avoid.

This place was filthy. We got one blanket and two bath-mat-sized “towels” for two people, and one had red stains that looked like blood. The quilt in the cupboard had no cover and yellow marks all over it. The toilets were broken, with dirty coffee cups on the sink, broken locks, hair clogging one toilet, and even a missing toilet seat (see pictures). In three days, I hardly saw anyone at reception. I only saw a cleaner, who sent me to manager Luz whenever I asked for help, but Luz was never there. They also charged me extra for tourist tax and a late check-in fee of €61.00, even though my Booking.com reservation included all taxes and fees. I've traveled to many cities and countries and never stayed anywhere as filthy as Hostel Excellence Barcelona. Don't waste your money.

My girlfriend and I had the worst accommodation experience we've ever had. I've never written a review before, but this was the first time. We arranged a late check-in with the Hostal staff, speaking by phone when we arrived in Barcelona and again 20 minutes before reaching Hostal Excellence. They said someone would be there with our room keys, but nobody showed up, and none of the contacts they gave us answered. We spent over an hour waiting and calling without a reply. By then it was 2:30 am and we needed sleep, so we had to find another, much more expensive hotel. We contacted Booking.com, who helped cancel our four-night stay and gave us a full reimbursement. Only after Booking.com had resolved it did the Hostal staff try to contact us, and they didn't even apologize. They showed no remorse for leaving us without somewhere to stay after we'd already paid.
