Hostal Can Xicu

I was hesitant at first because of the photos and how remote it seemed, but the great reviews convinced me to book, and I’m really glad I did. The room was even nicer in person, though the photos are accurate. We stayed in Room Espigol, which was spacious and had a separate bedroom and living room. There was a free bottle of wine, and a dining area just outside with coffee, tea, and a hot water boiler. We visited in November, when there weren’t many restaurants around. Cafe Bar Mundet had water, simple sandwiches, and some groceries. Parking was convenient and not far from the hotel, though we had to collect the parking lot keys at the hotel first. The stairs to our room were uneven, so this place may not suit someone with limited mobility.

Breakfast was at a small restaurant a few meters down the road, rather than on the premises. Back at the hotel, the comfortable beds and complimentary bottle of wine in the fridge were lovely touches. The bathroom had bathrobes, perfect for sitting out on the little terrace overlooking the garden. The rooms are decorated with care and attention to detail, in a building that’s part of the old castle and wall. It’s an amazing place in a beautiful village.

I’m writing this as my second review this year. My first stay, in March/April, was so good that I came back for two nights, from August 30 to September 1. After the first night in the Romani room, I’d barely slept because the bed was so uncomfortable. My wife contacted management to say we couldn’t spend another night there. They eventually offered us the room we’d had on our first visit, but wanted another €20. I found that insulting after a night with almost no sleep. My wife replied that we weren’t willing to pay extra and asked them to move us without charge. Management refused and said we had to pay, so we left for another hotel 50 km away and told them. Two hours later they replied that they didn’t understand why we couldn’t just enjoy our time at Can Xicu. These invisible people only seem to care about taking money, not customer satisfaction. They’re a disgrace to lovely Capmany.
