Hostal La Barretina

The couple running the place were really nice, and the bed and price were good. Great location too. If you're a light sleeper, ask for a room away from the street, as it can get loud at night.

Right in the town center, with a supermarket, cafe, and diners nearby, this was just right for a night in Figueres. The owner was friendly, and the place was clean, with an elevator, all for a low price. The shower was tiny, though. P.S. I loved the scent of the shampoo.

For 45 euros a night for a double, this is a good deal in central Figueres, the small town north of Barcelona that's home to the Dali museum. The hostal is pretty spartan, but comfortable, very clean, and practical if you don't need much room. We like firm mattresses, and the beds suited us. The owner was amiable and happy to look things up for us. The Dali museum is a five-minute walk away, and there are lovely parks and the city center nearby. For tapas and wine, try places off the beaten path where locals eat. Lunch at La Barretina is standard Spanish fare, good food at a fair price rather than gourmet. The menu del dia costs 11 euros and includes two courses, a drink, bread, and dessert or coffee. Before heading upstairs in the evening, we stopped at the bar for a glass of Carlos III brandy for 1.75 euros. A great nightcap after a lovely day and stay in Figueres.

I needed a hotel in a hurry, and this was a lovely find. The suite was enjoyable, with a TV and a balcony overlooking the town. The staff were friendly too.
