This is a converted house, so keep expectations at hostel level rather than a hotel. It was clean and nice, and the WiFi worked well. The location near "puerta del sol" is the main draw: metro stations make it easy to get around, and you can walk to most places too. Still, it's not quiet at night around "del sol", though that was expected. I booked a room with a "shared bathroom" and found it had no windows at all. I paid another 60 euro's to move to a room with a shower and an external window. The woman on staff was a bit rude, but I could live with that. We only got one key, which was a problem when we went separate ways. I found out too late that their website had a lower price, but all in all this is a cheap way to stay centrally in madrid.

We loved sitting for hours on our small balcony, right in the middle of everything, watching people go by. There were road works outside, but luckily they didn't work on weekends. The staff were friendly, and the place had a policy against noise late at night.

The location may be great, but this place was awful. There’s one shared WC for the whole hotel and two shared showers that can’t both be used at once. The beds and mattresses are really old, and barely 1.80 m long. I hardly slept, especially since it wasn’t even cheap. There are no windows in the rooms. You can open a panel above the door for light, but then every trip to the shared bathroom brings noise from the hallway during the night. Keep it closed and the room slowly turns into an oven. The ceiling fan only works when the lights are on, and there’s no privacy at all. I sneezed and clearly heard someone in the room opposite say “bless you.”

A good hotel.

Getting back to the hostel late is a problem. If you go out for a concert or a walk and return in the early morning, they don’t have keys for you to get in. The room I had was also windowless and had no air conditioning. In that infernal heat, it was stifling and horrible trying to sleep there for two nights. 👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻
