Hostal Don Alfonso

The rates are unbelievable for such an unbeatable spot, very close to Sol. My wife and I were unsure about staying at a hostel in Madrid, but after two stays in different rooms at Don Alfonso, we'd happily do it again. Lore was welcoming, kind, and helpful. Both rooms were clean and pleasant, though a little small. That was fine for one or two people. We were just above a busy boulevard, so there was some noise, but the windows kept it out.

The location is the only reason this Hostal gets four stars. My purchases and souvenirs were stolen from the room, and when I reported it, they did nothing. We stayed five nights and never got fresh towels, and I had to ask for toilet paper. The bathrooms are small, with room for just one person at a time.

The staff were very friendly, and you can walk to many landmarks from this prime location. But the room is extremely small for the price. With the bathroom door shut, I couldn't bend over the sink, and I had to sit sideways on the toilet. When my wife stood at the end of the bed, it was easier to walk across the bed than squeeze past her.

A nice budget hotel right in the heart of things, with nice staff.
