Hostal Huespedes Toledo

If you’re after anything beyond the absolute basics, choose somewhere else. A Hostal isn’t a Hotel. We had our own toilet and shower, basic furniture, no wardrobe, but plenty of hangers on a rail. The air conditioning worked well, there was lots of hot water, and the small electric kettle and hairdryer both worked. There’s no refrigerator in the room, but you can use one in the corridor for a few things if you want breakfast. The bedding was neither too soft nor too hard. Our room faced the street, so there was a little noise, though we enjoyed hearing birds in the morning. The place was very clean and in a perfect location. It’s on the third floor. I arrived late and had trouble finding it: there’s a small sign on the right of the main entrance, also written in Japanese, but there are several entrances into the patio. Go through the one just to the right after the main wrought iron door. Go up to the third floor and ring the WHITE doorbell, not the black one, if the door’s shut. I never really met anyone else staying at the same Hostal.

The way the owners treated me because of how I look ruined my trip to Madrid. My partner, a white man, went to the hostal a couple of minutes before me while I was at the supermarket across the road. He checked in under my name and told them I was on my way. When I arrived, nobody let me in through the intercom, and I got inside only because a random person was leaving. There are no signs for this hostal in the building, so I first ended up at another business’s door, where someone pointed me in the right direction. At the hostal, I rang the bell politely for about five minutes. I could hear people inside, but nobody opened. I sat on the stairs and texted my partner, who was in the room. He confirmed I was on the right floor and said he was getting dressed to come out. I kept knocking and could hear voices and footsteps near the door. After a long time, a man and woman opened up and shouted, “we do not have space for you,” before I’d even said anything. They also yelled, “why are you knocking on the door?” and “go away.” My partner came over, saw how badly they were treating me, and told them I was his partner. They both immediately apologized. The man said, “I saw you on the camera, but I didn't know you were his partner.” They’d been told I was coming and had seen me on camera, yet they chose not to open the door. I believe they refused because of my face and skin color.
