We were woken early when another guest used a key to enter our room. It was a mistake, but as three young women we felt unsafe, so we went to reception and asked for a refund for the unused second night so we could find another hotel. The owner was rude and shouted that we were trying to stay for free, calling us thieves. I understand it was an error, but we needed the money to stay elsewhere and couldn't have a calm conversation with him. He was very aggressive. He called the police. I'm glad they came, because his manner changed and we could finally work out a solution without shouting. He still joked to the officers that we might end up in jail, or something like that. He didn't come close to apologizing for the mistake and went straight to blaming us. The other man at the front desk was patient and nice, but he charged us far too much. My advice to the owner is not to shout at guests because of a scam by someone years ago. It's terrible for the business. Stay calm and try to sort things out, as he did once the police arrived. If you truly think a guest is scamming you, then call the police. It would've helped to apologize first and maybe offer us a different room so we could feel comfortable staying there. Anyway, choose this hotel if you want to feel humiliated in a foreign country.

It was clean enough and the decor was basic, but the price was still far too high. The location works well, apart from the very noisy bar right next door. Booking was a bad experience, the reception staff weren't particularly friendly, and the rooms barely block any sound. Doors slamming and noise from neighboring rooms meant we only slept from 1 a.m. until 7 a.m.

There was hardly room to move around, and the hotel cost a lot without offering much in return. Its prices were like those of a five-star place with premium service, but this didn't feel like that at all. We'd booked for the whole family and had told them our kids were coming, yet the owner, who was at reception, wouldn't let us check in until we paid an extra $105 for each child for “additional occupancy.” With no other hotels available, we had no real choice but to pay. It was the worst hotel experience I've had. The owner took advantage of us traveling as a family and seemed intent on getting every last penny. I'd tell people to stay away and find another hotel.

Prepaying for six nights was something I regretted. If the room has no trash bin, you're expected to buy a bag, and before showering there's a sign telling you to be careful not to break the glass door. Need more light to read? Buy bulbs from a local lighting shop. The hallways are dark too, so bring a flashlight. When it's hot and your allergies are bothering you, they say the whole building is hot, there's nothing they can do, and the windows should stay shut. Run out of toilet paper and you'll be told housekeeping will bring more the next time they clean.

The staff made me feel welcome as soon as I arrived in Madrid. Everyone was friendly and helpful, and they really did their best to make the stay comfortable and enjoyable. The rooms were beautifully appointed, and the amenities and facilities were all top-notch. My first visit to the city turned into an amazing stay at Hotel Freedom. The care and attention to detail were remarkable. It was a truly memorable experience, and I'd happily recommend it.
