Room Mate Mario, Madrid

We'd stay here again. The room was clean and comfortable, and we liked finding a welcome note there when we arrived. Staff were friendly and pointed out attractions on a map. Opera metro station is only a couple of minutes away. There's a supermarket a few doors down, handy for snacks instead of buying them from the minibar, and small water dispensers at reception.

For a short stay this could be a nice place, but the nightly price felt too high for what was offered. The reception team, though, were lovely: welcoming, helpful and very accommodating. When I had a medical emergency, the woman at reception helped me find a private hospital, and I really appreciated how attentive everyone was. The room had nice amenities, especially the liquid soap and shampoo. My single room, number 105, faced an inner courtyard, and it was too small for my taste. The room AC didn't work well and seemed centrally controlled, so I couldn't adjust the temperature. There also seemed to be poor ventilation throughout. On entering, my room smelled musty and stuffy, as did the entrance, reception and hallway.

We got in a little late on Monday, and Eva at reception made us feel at home right away. She was so welcoming, gave us recommendations and made the start of our trip really lovely.

At 300 euros a night, this hotel was a real letdown. The room was much too cold, and the amenities were basic at best. For that kind of money, I could've stayed at the five-star place next door.
