The people at Atlantis made a real difference, especially Ali, who was leading the volunteers' day to day work during my stay. The volunteers were lovely and genuinely cared. I think that comes from the owner (I can't remember his name) and the way the staff are led and chosen. I stayed nearly two weeks and met several other people who were there for longer too. It's spacious, very clean, friendly, and full of its own character. The place is well organized and the rules are taken seriously without being too strict. You can tell somebody cares about the hostel and the guests living together, instead of just trying to process as many people as possible. That changes the atmosphere, and people look out for one another because they feel cared for. I've seen a lot of hostels, and this is one of the best. It's especially good for a longer stay, and unlike many places in Las Palmas, it doesn't mainly cater to kids there to party on vacation. I'd highly recommend it, and I'm sure I'll be back next year.

What made the hostel special was the atmosphere, with the staff and other guests all adding to it ☺️ The rooms are roomy and clean, with high ceilings and beds that aren't squeezed together. Everyone on staff was helpful and friendly, with good tips and plenty of knowledge about the island. You can walk to lots of surf spots, and the buses to Las Palmas or Agaete are just two minutes away. I enjoyed my stay so much!

I had a strange, unwelcoming feeling at the hostel. I wasn't staying there, but after surfing, another student who was a guest invited me up to the roof terrace for coffee. Almost right away I was told to leave because “the owner doesn’t like having random people around the hostel.” I could understand that if I'd been hanging around all afternoon or evening, but I'd just taken part in their surf lessons. Being asked to go before I could even finish my coffee felt stingy. I'd emailed beforehand to check whether they offered intermediate lessons, explaining my level and what I hoped to improve. They said yes, so I booked three days. But I ended up in a mixed group with lots of beginners. The instructor was nice and tried his best to work with everyone, which earns an extra star from me, though the hostel made his job very difficult by not separating surfers by level.

We had a great week at Atlantis Surf Hostel. It's a lovely place for surfing, and the location is just right. It's quieter than Las Palmas, with a big rooftop terrace where you can relax. Carlos and his wife, Paul, and Gilbert were all so friendly and always there when we needed them. Thanks so much, see you next time! :)

There's a really cool former luxury hotel nearby where you can hang out or get something to eat. The bus stop is close, but the next shop is about half an hour away on foot, and there's not much else around. I paid 25 a night for a basement bed in a 12-bed dorm. Sand from the room above kept falling onto my bed, and it apparently cost the same as an empty 6-bed dorm. Maybe it's a good option if you're looking to learn to surf.
