A severe storm, road closures, and a local authority warning against travel, especially into the mountains, meant I couldn’t make my one-night booking at Villas el Alto. Even in those circumstances, the host wouldn’t waive the cancellation fee and just referred me to booking.com, without offering a flexible solution. Other places I’d booked on Gran Canaria understood the same situation and charged no cancellation fees, which made this especially disappointing. From my experience, I wouldn’t recommend this accommodation. The host didn’t seem accommodating or very customer-oriented when an unexpected problem came up.

For a week in March 2025, I paid 376.42 e through Booking.com, so it was a cheap place to stay. The owner, Miguel, welcomed me warmly, showed me around, and helped plan my first day, sending names and links for places to visit. The nature around the property is beautiful, and there’s a lovely, well-kept small town nearby. I asked to check out at 11-11:30 instead of 10:30 and was allowed to stay later. Adelaide usually responded quickly and was helpful with household issues, which I’m grateful for. Laundry was available, and they gave me a clothes dryer. There’s a warm blanket in the bedroom. The kitchen is spacious, though dark, with fairly new cookware enough for two people, and the electric stove heats quickly and works well. A lot depends on asking and arranging things. Workers changed my towels when I asked, but I had to request it. They only took out the trash on day five, once it started to smell and I asked. The same with the pool: I swam there, but it had leaves, old flower buds, and other rubbish in it all week until I asked a worker to clean it. A worker also fixed my shower door when I asked. There’s a dehumidifier in the kitchen, but you have to check its tank yourself. Mine overflowed and stopped working, so I had to empty it. The room was very humid and usually cold. The radiators came on and off at set times, and sometimes I couldn’t even get things dry. All the rooms and furniture had an unpleasant musty, moldy smell. My room was very dark, with small windows that let in little light, and the dark wooden blinds made it hard to see. The kitchen was dark too, and I didn’t feel comfortable or cozy in the rooms. Noise carried a lot. The upstairs neighbors moved furniture late at night, and it rumbled over my head. Sounds from the yard also came through loudly, sometimes keeping me from resting or sleeping. There were insects in the room too. I almost stepped on a woodlouse-centipede and saw them inside several times afterward. A worker said they weren’t dangerous, but I don’t like insects where I’m staying. There’s no kettle or coffee maker. The drive to the place takes a long time, and getting there or back each time calls for good driving skills and a strong nervous system. Outside, the villa looked neglected, with branches and technical waste piled in the yard. Fallen leaves and flowers by the pool weren’t cleared during my week there, so it looked untidy. The bedding was uncomfortable. The cover used instead of a sheet kept riding up and left the mattress uncovered, and there was also a cover in place of a duvet cover, which I didn’t like. Shower water came in uneven spurts and could get scalding. The small boiler barely provided enough hot water for one person. Wi-Fi was very weak, so I had to use the Finnish internet network.

We’ll be back. The apartments were clean, quiet, and tucked away in a small complex in the beautiful village of Fontanales. Miguel and the others were superb hosts, easygoing and relaxed while still being very professional. A perfect stay.

Our favorite part was starting the day on the terrace in the sun and quiet, with the views above the clouds. The common area is lovely, with flowers, palm and fruit trees, and plenty of space to sit. It was also great for relaxing by the pool or watching the stars at night. The location is beautiful and puts you close to some of Gran Canaria’s most incredible natural places. If you love nature, this is a much better fit than staying in one of the big cities. We were very happy here and had no complaints. The beds were comfortable, the kitchen fully equipped, the bathroom clean, and there were garages for the cars. Miguel was the best part. He was always around and ready to help, and his useful tips and recommendations made our holiday even more memorable. We’ve never had such a welcoming and kind landlord. Thanks again for everything, Miguel. We’d love to come back.

We had a great time here as a family and will be back very soon.
