Apartamento en Somo

Having the option to rent by the day was a big plus for us, since we can't take a whole week off. Other apartments in town require weeklong or fortnightly bookings. The daily price is naturally higher per night than a two-week stay, and in August it's hard to find single days for €150 for four people with a garage because that option isn't offered. July and September, though, have fantastic prices and are well worth considering. The apartment is very close to the beach, clean, and fitted out with a new fridge, TV, microwave, sofa, and lamps. Everything is brand new, which is a real advantage for a beach rental. There's also a fully private 25m² terrace with an awning, enclosed at the sides so people can't see in. The garage is handy and big enough for surfboards and bikes. For the area, we think it's excellent value and very affordable. You can't ask for more.

Having a garage matters to me, since parking is scarce and I like to leave my car somewhere safe. The apartment has one, and it's also just a short walk from the beach. I surf, and Somo has several surf schools. There are shops nearby too, and Santander is 15 minutes away by boat. We liked the two terraces for eating outside and enjoying the good weather. The apartment was clean, nicely decorated, reasonably priced, and the service was very friendly. I'll definitely come back!

It works for three people, and being near the beach with a parking spot is a real advantage. But the trundle bed mattress is very uncomfortable, and the old kitchen is almost impossible to use for cooking because the hob barely heats or takes ages. The terrace table is tiny and worn out, barely enough for four, and the cleaning left a lot to be desired.

I want to describe my own stay as objectively as I can, in case it helps someone else. At €150 a night in August, the price felt almost like a rip-off, though I understand supply and demand at that time of year. We found many better options in Somo, including hotels, for less money. You only realize that after you've paid. I won't be returning. The apartment is near Somo beach and has its own parking space, which are the positives. Getting into the parking area is complicated, though, and depending on your vehicle the maneuvers can be very difficult. There are also a lot of stairs to both the building entrance and the apartment, which wasn't mentioned and could be impractical for anyone with reduced mobility. We didn't have a car, either, and weren't told about the stairs in advance. Inside, it felt like stepping back to the 1960s. The bathroom is outdated, the shower curtain seemed unhygienic, and the sink and toilet were chipped. The plastic shower was in very poor shape and sprayed water everywhere. The terraces are so close to the neighbor's that there's almost no privacy, making it uncomfortable to eat outside. You can hardly tell where your terrace ends and theirs begins. The electric hob looked neglected, its flame markings were missing, and it took a very long time to heat. There wasn't much kitchenware. The owner left just one roll of toilet paper and no cleaning products. The apartment was poorly cleaned. During the Covid pandemic, it would have been good to verify the cleaning process before going in, but all we saw was a wet floor. This review is a warning for families who might only discover these problems when it's too late to sort them out. The place doesn't appear to be advertised on Booking.com or other platforms. There was no contract, and we paid under the table, leaving virtually no way to make a claim.
