We went in the evening and the golden lights made the plaza feel almost magical. Cafés, restaurants and locals gave it a lively feel, while the Baroque buildings were wonderful to admire. A lovely place to take a break.

Built in the Baroque style by the Churriguera architects, the square has a harmonious look and may be the most beautiful in Spain. Its construction ran from 1729 to 1755, after Philip V rewarded Salamanca for its loyalty in the War of Succession. The lower level has semicircular arches resting on sturdy pillars, with medallions of kings from Alfonso XI to Fernando VI and figures including Cervantes, El Cid, Pedro Colón and Hernán Cortés. The City Hall stands on the north side; the east side is the Royal Pavilion, decorated exuberantly and bearing a bust of Philip V. It’s also the city’s liveliest spot, its centre and soul. The main streets meet here, and locals and visitors gather on the busy terraces for a drink or stroll around and chat.
