Hostal Juli

For E30, my room and breakfast were such good value that I was happy to give E50. I had hot water both morning and evening, soft towels, and a quiet main street. I left the balcony door open all night and slept without being woken. I ate at the Oasis bar down the road: 12 chicken wings and fried potatoes with cream and spicy sauce for E8. The owner and staff were a pleasure to deal with. I wish there were more places like this along the Camino. Thank you! I don't get some of the negative comments. If you expect 4 Seasons rooms and service for very little money, you need a reality check.

The room itself was clean and comfortable, but I can't recommend this place. They advertised a washer and dryer, though they didn't actually have one. We also had almost nowhere nearby to eat, so we ended up having the pilgrim menu at the hostel. The dining room was filthy, with food, napkins and toothpicks all over the floor. We were the only customers on a quiet Sunday afternoon, so I couldn't understand how it got that way. The meal was easily the worst pilgrim menu we had in six weeks on the Camino. I'd go a few more kilometers to Astorga instead.

The food was very good and great value. I had breakfast twice and two pilgrim dinners at the hostal, and enjoyed all of them. Drinks were inexpensive too, so I had quite a few sangrias. The staff were friendly, and the place was more peaceful and cheaper than Astorga, where I’d originally considered taking a rest day. I spent two nights at Hostal Juli in San Justo de la Vega, a lovely stop before Astorga. My second floor double room had a private bathroom, a proper double bed instead of the usual twins, plenty of space, a desk and a small balcony. Wifi worked well downstairs in the bar and on the outside terrace, though the signal might not reach rooms upstairs.

The rooms were very nice, though our shower may have been a bit low on pressure. The pilgrim menu was fantastic, and the owner/bar worker worked harder than anyone I've ever seen to make us feel welcome and give us a great stay. We certainly did!
