Hostal Liébana

We stayed one night with my partner before our flight from Santander the next morning. The room was fine, but there was a lot of hair on the bed sheets, definitely not ours. We also couldn’t open the shutters. It wasn’t quiet either, and people shouting outside woke us in the middle of the night.

The room was nice and clean, fairly well located, and the bed was comfortable. But there was no fan or air conditioning, which felt ridiculous in a country with hot summers. I had to sleep with the windows open, and even though the road wasn’t noisy, I could hear people shouting at night. The shower head kept jumping out of its socket when I finished showering, so it was always at risk of hitting me. Check-in also brought a double-booking problem, which wasn’t the hotel’s fault. The owner reacted rudely and wasn’t helpful. Even after the issue was sorted out, I had to pay 50 euros extra for a problem that wasn’t mine. The owner stayed defensive and unwelcoming.

When we got back from dinner, a man was stretched out on our bed watching TV. He said he was fixing it, but our room door was open and all our belongings, including our backpacks, were there. I was furious. Earlier, the receptionist had asked us to leave our keys, which I’d never been asked to do before. The place was very expensive, too. We’d spent all day walking the Camino de Santiago and it was around midnight, so we stayed, though I’d rather have slept at the airport. Honestly, I’d choose the airport next time.

The man at the desk is an irritable old guy, and the prices for drinks and parking seem to be made up as he goes. I’d only use this place if I had no other option in an emergency.
