Albergue Matias

My trip to Sarria kept getting delayed. First my train ran late and I thought I’d miss the connection, then I was at risk of missing the last train of the day. Each time I updated them, they told me not to worry. When I eventually had to take a taxi, they said my safety was what mattered. They were waiting outside the restaurant when I arrived and greeted me with a handshake. The restaurant had just closed, but they still made me a pizza when I asked if it was open. It felt like they sincerely valued me as a customer. I really appreciate that and recommend staying there.

A solid place to begin the Camino, with spacious, clean rooms and very good value for the price. It’s right on the trail, too. At this rate, I honestly can’t complain.

The restaurant is cosy and serves very, very good pizza. Our private room for two was comfortable and nicely heated, though the dorm area looked crowded and was oddly empty while we were there. Getting to the accommodation at the back means going through the restaurant kitchen, which felt a little unusual. It’s family-run by nice people, and we had a good stay.

The albergue itself was okay, but this was my worst night on the Camino. They mix primary and high school students with regular pilgrims, and the students were there without teacher supervision. They screamed all evening and through the night.
