The former Royal Mint is now the Teatro de la Fundición, or Mint Theatre. It stands in the Arenal district near Puerta de Jerez, and its construction dates to around 1522, in the 16th century, during King Philip II’s reign. Coins for the Spanish Empire, including its territories in the Americas, were made there. Sebastián Van der Borcht, an architect and military engineer, designed the entrance on old Santander Street.

Casa de la Moneda, the Royal Mint of Seville, sits near Puerta de Jerez and the Indian Archives, in the Casco Antiguo. Its outdoor passages, courtyards, and public streets are freely accessible, while the residential buildings remain private. I’d explore the complex on foot at an unhurried pace, ideally in the morning or early evening, when the light brings out the old masonry and commemorative details. The site is tied to both imperial history and Andalusian folklore. In the 16th century, especially under King Philip II, gold and silver brought from overseas territories in America were sent here, melted down, and turned into coins. Builders including Juan de Minjares helped shape the complex, whose inner courtyard, portals, and fortified walls served the security and operations of this strategic financial center. There’s also a personal, cultural thread: Francisco de Asís Palacios Ortega, known as Paco Palacios "El Pali", was born here. A plaque in the alley named for him commemorates the performer of traditional sevillanas. The former mint’s austere industrial walls alongside the artist’s songs about everyday life, nostalgia, and Sevillian neighborhood traditions make for a distinctive mix. Some parts of the complex are now used for high-end housing and hospitality. The original layouts, historic patios, and paving have been preserved, giving a direct material link to the city’s past. This hidden little maze feels noble, nostalgic, and contemplative to me. Moving from busy streets into the quiet courtyards, with the empire’s history meeting echoes of Andalusian music, is a sensory experience I find fascinating. For me, Casa de la Moneda is a symbol of Seville’s institutional past, industrial architecture, and urban poetry, with remarkable historic views in the city center. It has an elegant atmosphere and a striking sense of history, and seeing it offers a different perspective on Seville. I’ve attached a few photos and a video too. If you enjoy them, please leave a smile, thumbs-up, heart, or other kind reaction under the review and photos. I always appreciate the encouragement.

We had a great meal, and the prices felt fair for the quality. The seafood risotto and gourmet burger were both beautifully cooked, with fresh ingredients and balanced flavors. The homemade tiramisu was delicious, one of the best we’ve had in ages. The staff were warm and attentive from the moment we arrived, greeting us with a smile and getting us to our table quickly. The welcoming atmosphere and background music added a nice touch. We’ll definitely come back, and I’d recommend it for both the food and service.

The restored facade looks beautiful, and from the entrance you can spot remnants of the old shipyards. This is where silver coins from the Americas were melted down, and some remains of the Mint are still here.

Easy to get to, and a very nice place. The tapas are great and reasonably priced.
