Afropolitan Hotel

The location was good, the rooms were fine, and the staff were friendly, but the service wasn't. Our family planned to stay in January, and our representative was told we could settle the bill at checkout. We booked six rooms across different dates, three for two weeks and three for a month, but we kept getting calls at different times asking whether we were checking out or ready to pay, even though we'd already given them our dates. We asked for an extra bed for our child. Staff said they'd check and get back to us, but we heard nothing until just four days before checkout. We had gone without the bed for three weeks, and only when the owner came did they want to bring one in. Breakfast was cold. If something on the menu had run out, like French toast, they wouldn't make more until everything else was gone. The owner also kept changing the rules, so the hotel didn't feel reliable. One day we were told to pay, and another day, when we called for room service, staff said it was no longer available from that day because the owner had said so, even though we were willing to pay. The fridges were there but didn't work, and the bedside lamps were broken. We also saw cockroaches now and then. For a stay longer than two or three days, I'd look elsewhere. This isn't the place.

The people at this little hotel were wonderful from top to bottom. I extended my stay because of the Ethiopian hospitality I received. It's also in a quiet little corner, with transport, restaurants, and coffee shops a 5-7 minute walk away. I gave it three stars because the wear and tear from the last five years of service hasn't really been addressed. It feels like almost nothing has been replaced since the grand opening. The owner seems more focused on micromanaging staff than on quality control or reinvesting. One thing they have put money into is a community garden library across from the hotel. The owner and staff gave us wonderful service, and the terrace has stunning views at night. I had the best meal I've eaten in Ethiopia here. The shower was amazing, the beds were very comfortable, and it's an excellent hotel in Addis at an affordable price.

A lovely hotel with a comfortable bed and a nice shower with decent water pressure. The room doors were confusing and tricky to use. The restaurant was decent, but very, very quiet.
