The pancakes were the one genuinely good part of breakfast. Dinner was a different story: both meals were expensive and disappointing. Roasted chicken breast turned up as a tough chicken leg with tomato and onions, so hard I could barely cut it. The next night’s fried chicken was a bit better, but the spaghetti was cold and hadn’t been fried. My room was clean when I arrived and roomy, but it got unbearably hot. The air conditioning didn’t work, and the little fan couldn’t cool the whole space. One of the two beds was broken. During the two nights I was there, housekeeping only made the bed and gave the bathroom a quick clean. The bathroom had just one piece of soap, and the water pressure was too low to shower comfortably. There aren’t many other places to stay in Turmi if you’re visiting the tribes.

A warning for anyone staying here: there seems to be an electrical overload in the rooms that can burn out chargers. It happened to us and to other groups too. Charge your phones, cameras, and laptops in the restaurant, not in your room.

We returned after a few days because we were having trouble with fuel and muddy roads, and the manager tried to charge us three and a half times the usual price. He said it had suddenly become the busy season, even though the parking lot was completely empty. Be careful.

We had a lovely stay for a couple of days in this remote part of Hamer, near the small town of Turmi. Emerlad Lodge was just right. The food and drinks were delicious, and our accommodation was clean with a cool shower. A nice place to stay in Hamer, highly recommended.

The staff were warm and awesome, which is why I’m giving it two stars. The hut-like rooms have beautiful architecture, but the property itself is terrible. We arrived to find our room dirty, with shoe marks in the bathroom that looked like someone had walked through in dirty shoes. There were lots of insects, but that’s nature, so I can’t blame the lodge for that. The rooms being dirty and the shower not working are another matter. And the food? OMG. Go here just to sleep and leave in the morning. Keep your expectations very low.
