Roomundo

About this property

Amid the Taveuni jungle, peering out across the Somosomo Straight, sits the fabled five-star resort Maravu — a once exclusive escape now turned humble lodge. Accommodation is laid out like a Fijian Village and every room has high ceilings, hardwood floors and traditional decor. The little restaurant/cafe is open daily. The open plan dining area allows stunning views at meal time. Make the most of the massive indoor/outdoor deck area for dining or relaxing. Imagine, if you can, a paradise so perfect that man and nature still exist in perfect harmony with one another. Turquoise water twinkles in the blazing sunlight. Lush green landscapes are laden with flowers, fruits and bright red chili peppers.

The staff were incredible in general, especially Kali and Rafa. They helped us find plenty to do and went out of their way to make the most of the weather. We stayed a few nights at Maravu and enjoyed it. The restaurant was consistently good, and breakfast was our favourite. I’d highly recommend it to anyone visiting Taveuni, and think it’s a must on a Fiji holiday.

–Maravu Lodge– We stayed from late October into November, in the off season, and this review is based on small island accommodation. Maravu happily exceeded our expectations. I’ve added some tips below about diving arrangements and places you can walk to. –Staff and activities– The staff were incredible. Special mention to Raffa and Kali, who held a Kava Ceremony each night and entertained us with guitar and singing. They also took us on a Fruit Walk around the lodge’s 20 acres, picking coconuts and other fruit from trees, then opening them so we could eat and drink. It lasted over an hour and I highly recommend it. Staff can also help book activities and taxis, with options listed on a board. –Room– My wife and I were on our honeymoon and booked a room with a king bed and two singles. It was beautiful, with a private outdoor shower and a very comfortable bed for the price. There was air conditioning, but the horizontal folding glass windows found in many parts of Fiji take a while to close properly. We preferred leaving them open and using the fan. Air flowed in from all sides and kept the room pleasant, even on very hot days and nights. –Food and lodge– The food was surprisingly good, especially given how hard it can be to get ingredients on small islands. All five meals we had at the lodge were better than expected. The menu included burgers and chips as well as curries, with breakfast, lunch, and dinner available. There’s also a bar and canteen selling alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, chips, noodle cups, and snacks. The lodge itself is beautiful, made mostly of bamboo and wood. The open dining area feels airy, and it was a pleasure to walk through the place in the morning. –Nearby spots and diving– From the main dining area, an obvious staircase shortcut, which Google doesn’t show, takes about 10 minutes to walk down to Dive Bar & Grill. Tromonto is about 15 minutes away on foot. Both have great views. We had lunch at Dive Bar & Grill and dinner at Tromonto twice. You can snorkel from Dive Bar & Grill. We did four dives with Taveuni Ocean Sports (TOS), which Maravu Lodge helped us book when we arrived, after we’d emailed TOS ahead of time. They arranged our transfer there and back, about a 15 minute drive. When several guests from Maravu were diving, a minibus picked everyone up together. –Other activities– These were among the activities listed at the Maravu Lodge front desk: snorkelling, waterfall hikes, natural waterslides, a Honeymoon Island Tour for snorkelling and relaxing, and taxis into the nearest town or store.

The service was terrible. DO NOT STAY HERE! THIS IS A SCAM. There was no power from 11 AM to 4 PM, and the room was too hot to stay in. It was VERY OVER PRICED, and the staff weren’t helpful. Our room was far up a hill, but no one helped with our bags or showed us the room. They handed over the key and pointed. There was a dead gecko and poop on the bed. THIS PLACE IS A HOSTEL and they treat you like it. Pay a bit more and stay at a real hotel down the road with real hospitality.

We had a great stay for a low price and felt very welcome. The staff were friendly and the food was really good. The tours were amazing, especially the dolphin trip, fishing, snorkelling, and fruit picking with Mateo and Cali. Taveuni was our favourite place in all of Fiji. The location was good, with nice snorkelling right off the beach and a cafe and sea view restaurant nearby.
