Le Colombier de Cyrano et Roxanne means the “dovecote of Cyrano and Roxana.” In the morning, you might see one or two pigeons on the ledges, cooing. There’s a full review and short film about Le Colombier on placescases, the only blog for reviews and ratings viewed through its 5D Sensograph of the five human senses. The house dates back to the 17th century. It’s beautiful, very old, has blue shutters, and leans slightly to one side. You can feel the slope inside too, on both the first and second floors. There are decorations and little antique objects in nearly every corner. It borders on kitsch, but it’s fun and interesting to look around. The second-floor room feels like an attic. As you enter, there’s a beam to step over. Somehow that adds to the authenticity and playfulness instead of being annoying. There’s also a small, sweet, romantic terrace. With a bottle of wonderful local wine, quiet music, and someone you love, it makes for a real Zen experience. The large first-floor room is comfortable, with a closet, fireplace, and cute painted antique cabinet. It has a separate bathroom and toilet, which is quite common in this area. The rooms are somewhat dark because the windows are small, but the house was built that way to protect against heat and cold. The other houses around it in the historic center are similar. The owners and the person who served breakfast were very nice, though they did scold us a little about adjusting the heating rheostat and adding to the electricity costs. We followed their other requests: taking our shoes off in the hallway, wearing socks or slippers indoors, turning off all the lights, and not bringing glasses or food into the living room. But raising the temperature from 18 to 22 degrees before bed because it was very cold seemed to be a problem. That took away some of the enjoyment, since guests shouldn’t be expected to freeze when it’s 6-10 degrees outside. The kitchen has everything you need: microwave, oven, refrigerator, and dishwasher. There were even three coffee makers, for Americano, espresso, and manual Pavoni, for serious espresso fans. When I asked if they used the Pavoni, I was told it was decorative. I think they may just not want to handle it because it’s expensive and tricky to use. The rooms are cleaned and the sheets changed every two or three days. Our towels weren’t changed. We weren’t sure how to know which day to put them on the floor, so it’s probably best to ask when that happens. There’s a Marshal speaker in the living room, and you can play music if you know how to pair it with your phone. From a first-floor room, you can hear people walking upstairs because the wooden floor creaks a lot. That’s part of the old house’s charm. Breakfast includes several kinds of fragrant jam and homemade honey. With freshly baked croissants and coffee, it’s a gourmet’s dream. The bathroom had liquid soap scented like homemade soap and citrus-scented shower gel. If you buy strong-smelling cheeses and keep them in the fridge, the more often you open it, the more the whole ground floor will smell like them. That’s up to you, and nobody will scold you for your fancy choice.

Right in the middle of old town Bergerac, this is a really unusual B&B. Betty made us feel like part of her family. The rooms were clean and full of history, and breakfast was delicious. It gave us plenty of energy for a boat trip on the nearby river Dordogne.

We were delighted to return to Le Colombier this week after a pleasant stay there two years ago. The house is remarkable, furnished with taste and refinement, and full of surprises. We had a warm welcome and enjoyed spending time together. You have to let yourself be swept along by its history!
