The hosts were incredibly kind, and we soon felt like old friends. They’re well traveled and well read, and took such good care of our little family. We left feeling relaxed and welcome. Thank you, William and Anne, we hope to return soon. The building has a charming, old-fashioned feel, with 17th-century wooden floors, custom drapes from floor to ceiling, and interesting books and reading material all around. It’s a hidden gem, a short walk from the center of Brantome yet surrounded by nature. Our daughter was thrilled by the goats and sheep on the property and visited them to say hello and feed them a couple of times a day. We could make simple meals in the clubhouse by the pool when we didn’t want to eat out. Breakfast and dinner, if booked in advance, were lovingly prepared and delicious. A picture-perfect village is nearby, too.

William and Anne were wonderful hosts, and Manoir du Chatenet is the one place from our three-week trip where I’d definitely return. My wife and I drove over 2K km and stayed in many places, including a 5-Star Spa/Resort in the French Riviera. Paris, Barcelona, and Monaco are exciting, and their Basilicas and Chateaus are inspiring, but nothing took me back in time like staying at Manoir du Chatenet. I barely wanted to leave, although of course we did. The nearby town is within walking distance, with sights and restaurants worth seeing. The Chatenet is amazing, with enchanting grounds and fabric wall coverings in its many rooms. The pet goats and sheep will lift your spirits and make you smile. There’s a heated pool, an older but perfectly functional tennis court, a lovely vegetable garden, and fruit and walnut trees. As I told William when we left, “This place is Magical”.

The garden and interior are carefully maintained, with spacious rooms and tasteful decor that never feels overdone. I’d make a point of having breakfast here. William is the kind of host every traveler hopes to meet, intelligent, refined, and incredibly kind. He and his wife, Jane, run a wonderful home in the Brantôme countryside. If there’s a genius loci in the area, I think it’s at Châtenet, where visitors can almost forget the destructive side of touristic consumerism.

The manor house is magnificent and peaceful, with a lot of history, but it’s been severely neglected. Breakfast had to be shared with wasps.
