Citadel Hotel

We arrived late and found that the key card for the adjacent family room we’d booked didn’t work. The connecting doors were locked, and there was no key. We called the number we’d been given but got no answer, so I ended up sleeping on a hard floor. There were three of us, including our son, and the double bed was only just big enough. When we asked for a refund, the owner ignored all our calls and apparently told the booking site the key worked. It didn’t. We spent over half an hour trying to get into the room and calling for help. The worst hotel experience I’ve had. Don’t book it unless you want to feel completely ripped off.

The room was relatively clean, but small and very basic, with a tiny bathroom and just one plug socket. There was no wardrobe or way to make a drink. Nobody was at reception when we tried to check in, so we had to call a number and wait for someone to come let us in.

We were two couples travelling together and had adjoining rooms described as a family room. The place was cheap and well located, but the accommodation itself was very basic. Our rooms were on the top floor, up stairs with no lift. You enter using a keypad, and the details are sent by email. I had no internet access, so I didn’t receive the information in time. There was no one at the building, and I had to phone. Make sure you have the entry details before you arrive.

Cheap and fine for a short stop before the Channel Tunnel, which is only nine minutes away. The bed was comfortable, but the walls are paper thin and the bathroom is tiny.
