Auberge de la Caillère

Our favorite meal of two weeks in France was here, and the stay was great value. The rooms were clean and comfortable, service was professional, and the food was delicious. Everything really was exceptional.

Breakfast was excellent, and the room was spotless and very comfortable. We stayed for four nights and ate at the bistro once, where the food was good. The staff were generally friendly and helpful, though that varied a bit depending on who we spoke to. I’d recommend the hotel and would stay here again if we come back to this area.

The breakfast had an impressive spread, from plenty of healthy choices to eggs, bacon, sausages, pancakes, and even a glass of bubbly if you wanted one. It’s the best hotel breakfast we’ve ever had, so it was a shame the booking options were room only or half board, with no bed-and-breakfast rate. The hotel itself is beautiful, modern, and very clean, with stunning bedrooms and bathrooms. The staff were polite, professional, and helpful, and the service was very good. We also appreciated having a cafetière, fresh coffee, and a kettle in the room. There’s no mini fridge unless you pay €20 a day for one. We were less impressed by the bistro dinner. The Baba Ganoosh to share was great, but cost an extra 7€, which seemed odd after we’d already paid for a three-course meal that wasn’t cheap. I love dips and didn’t fancy anything else on the starter list. My fish was a little too rich but also bland, and came without sides or potatoes. Dessert was okay, and drinks felt a bit overpriced. It’s a lovely hotel, but we felt some of those extra charges were unnecessary.

We weren’t expecting food this good from a hotel a little off the usual routes, but it was some of the best we ate in France. What a treat.
