The site had plenty going for it on our first visit: flat, mostly shady pitches, lots to do, a decent-sized pool and, best of all, the chance to sit by the Dordogne and paddle or swim right on the grounds. We hoped to come back. A year later, though, it felt neglected. In August the wash blocks went uncleaned for days, and the owners seemed more interested in spending time with friends than caring for the site.

We had a lovely summer holiday in a beautiful spot beside the Dordogne, with decent-sized pitches and basic but adequate toilets and washing facilities. The bar and restaurant had limited service. There seemed to be two young helpers working under an older woman who put in long hours every day. We stayed an extra night. When we left, a young assistant said he couldn't operate the card machine and asked my wife to leave her card details. Once home, we found the company had charged us an extra 64 Euros. Despite our efforts to get it refunded, they haven't replied. That has left a bitter taste and is why I'm posting negative feedback.

Carennac is unbelievably beautiful, and the Dordogne is perfect for paddling, swimming and canoeing. We had a great time on the river and enjoyed the area, though the campsite itself left us feeling unwelcome. We only made a few requests, but they were turned down. When we asked if we could take our own kayaks and pay to use the shuttle between sites, we were told we had to rent their kayaks to use the bus. My kids say they won't come back; I probably would, and I think a warmer welcome could make some of the harsh reviews less severe. The pitches are a reasonable size and the facilities work, but the place feels dated and needs renovation. There was no toilet paper or toilet seats. Seeing everyone head to the toilets in the morning carrying their own versions of toilet paper was almost funny. Still, we didn't find it dirty, despite what other reviews say. One woman seemed to handle everything from morning till night, and must be exhausted. Two younger staff members helped with activities and the bar; they were very nice and helpful. Food and drink were adequate and fairly priced.

Good value, and a quiet campsite with access to the Dordogne. The owner and his wife don't speak any English. The mobile homes weren't properly cleaned, and at times there was a smell like an open drain.

The entrance wasn't clearly marked, but there's a nice pool, a little-kids' playground and an inflatable mattress for older kids. There are ping pong tables and a pétanque court too. The camping cars are roomy enough for a family of six, or you can bring your own tent. Dogs are allowed for a small fee. Restaurants and supermarkets are 4-6 km away, and you can go canoeing nearby or fish if you like.
